Hiring Process

1. What are a Firefighters duties?: Eastchester Firefighters respond to emergency situations and protect the public. Responsibilities include fire fighting and prevention, salvage, and rescue operations. This work requires mental acuity and physical stamina in the performance of duties. Routine maintenance and custodial work on the station house and equipment are required.

3. Can a woman be a Firefighter?: Yes, Eastchester Fire District strongly encourages women to become Firefighters.

4. When is the next written exam?: The next Westchester County Civil Service Firefighter exam will be administered on February 11, 2023. The application deadline is December 15, 2022. The Cost for the Exam is $100.00. Visit www.westchestergov.com/hr for more information

5. Will EFD offer a free exam prep course?: Yes - EFD will be offering a free exam preparation course. SIGN UP HERE for updates. More information will be sent out in the coming weeks.

6. After I pass the test, what should I expect?: Based on your performance on the exam, your name will be put on a civil service list in list number order. You must then be nominated by Eastchester Fire District to take the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) physical portion of the exam. If offered a position as a Probationary Firefighter with Eastchester Fire District, you will then take a medical, be subject to a drug screening, and begin your character and background investigation. Your eligibility requirements will also be checked at this time. You must then complete a 17-week classroom and physical fitness program that includes fire service training through the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services.

7. Do I have to have a driver’s license to be a Firefighter?: Yes, you need a valid New York State Driver's license to be appointed as an Eastchester Firefighter.

9. How long does it take to establish a list after I take the Firefighter exam?: The New York State Civil Service Commission scores examinations. Eligible lists are established, on average, three months after the examination date.
