Eastchester Firefighters respond to emergency situations and protect the public. Responsibilities include fire fighting and prevention, salvage, and rescue operations. This work requires mental acuity and physical stamina in the performance of duties. Routine maintenance and custodial work on the station house and equipment are required.

Based on your performance on the exam, your name will be put on a civil service list in list number order. You must then be nominated by Eastchester Fire District to take the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) physical portion of the exam. If offered a position as a Probationary Firefighter with Eastchester Fire District, you will then take a medical, be subject to a drug screening, and begin your character and background investigation. Your eligibility requirements will also be checked at this time. You must then complete a 17-week classroom and physical fitness program that includes fire service training through the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services.

Fire extinguishers should be inspected & maintained annually by certified personnel. Eastchester Fire District does not provide this service, but there are many commercial services in the area that do. If you would like to dispose of a fire extinguisher please drop it off at any of our five Fire Stations.

Eastchester Fire District does not accept unused, expired medication and/or needles. However, Westchester County offers multiple resources on where you can properly dispose of these items. Visit their website for more information.

No, Fire Services are funded through property taxes, there is no charge for any type of fire service response.

When an alarm is received it must be investigated and verified. There may be cases where the alarm was activated accidentally, OR where the resident believed there was no danger when there actually was a fire in the wall, oven, appliances, and much more.

Due to the varying call volume and the central location of our five fire stations, a fire engine could arrive on location before an ambulance. This allows firefighters to begin rendering life-saving care in situations when seconds matter. All Eastchester Fire District Firefighters are trained in Emergency Medical Response.

Fire Prevention
The goal of fire prevention is to educate the public to take precautions to prevent potentially harmful fires and be educated about surviving them. It is a proactive method of preventing fire-based emergencies and reducing the damage caused by them.

Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. Carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years.

Smoke detectors should be located in all bedrooms, outside the bedrooms, and at least one on every floor of the house.

If the detector activates, leave the area immediately and call 911. Carbon Monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that causes severe medical complications in high doses. The only way to protect yourself is to install the proper detectors. Install detectors within 15 feet of all bedrooms and on every floor with a carbon monoxide source.

The Eastchester Fire District endeavors to inspect all multiple dwellings (three family and above) and all commercial buildings annually. Contact the Fire Prevention Bureau by calling 914-723-2784 or e-mail Fire Prevention so our firefighters will be aware of your situation during an emergency. Keep a telephone in your bedroom at night so you can call 911 if you are unable to exit safely.

Do not plug refrigerators, microwaves, air conditioners, or other appliances into a power strip or surge protector. Do not run the cord for the power strip under a rug or through a wall. Unapproved cube adaptors should never be used. Never overload a receptacle.

Qualifications of Voters:
- Eighteen years of age.
- Citizen of the United States.
- A REGISTERED voter with the Westchester County Board of Elections
- A resident of the Town of Eastchester including the Villages of Tuckahoe and Bronxville for thirty (30) days prior to the election.
