Fire Chief's Message While we are experiencing unseasonably warm weather as we enter the winter months, it's still important to keep cold weather safety in mind. Colder temperatures mean space heaters and fireplaces will be utilized more in homes. I suggest you look at the safety information on using both of these forms of heat here. With the Thanksgiving Holiday approaching, I would like to remind residents that the start of the holiday season marks a time when the frequency and severity of fire incidents are typically elevated. Most Thanksgiving fires start as kitchen fires. Remember to stay in the kitchen when cooking, keep combustible items like pot holders and towels away from burners, and make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Last month, we responded to 402 calls for Emergency Services - 224 of those calls being EMS-related events. You may view our Monthly Activity reports here and our Annual Activity Report here.
Our members continue to train in various technical rescue disciplines, such as high-angle rope rescue, simulating a real-life rescue situation for scaffolding accidents, and rescuing people from an apartment building. Members also trained in firefighter rescue, focusing on mayday training and radio communications. You may view members' training highlights on our social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
An order was placed for a 100-foot mid-mount tower ladder from Pierce's local dealer Firematic Supply Inc. The expected delivery date is January 2024. We also received the John Deere Gator, which will be used for victim transport on a backboard or stokes basket and primarily for special events. We're excited to bring this state-of-the-art equipment to the Fire District to provide the best response to our residents.
In closing, I wish to remember exempt Volunteer Firefighter Peter Iodice, badge #1356, who passed away on October 26, 2022. He served the community as a member of the Tuckahoe Hose Company for over 15 years, from December 12, 1957, to September 14, 1972.
Respectfully Yours in Service,
Brian Tween
